Many people follow a nutritional detox program to rid their body of toxins, feel better and have more energy. Standard Process is a 3 week program of eating vegetables and fruits along with shakes and nutritional supplements.
How do you describe the most basic concept of a detox?
Dr. Ken Freedman: Well, let me put it to you this way, Liz. Would you like to live in a dirty house?
RC: Not at all. No.
Dr. Ken Freedman: Or, how does it make you feel when you get in your car and it’s all cluttered up with garbage and wrappers and clutter?
RC: It makes you feel dirty and very uncomfortable, actually.
Dr. Ken Freedman: Well, your body is the house and the vehicle that your life lives in. And the whole concept is, you know, you spring clean your house and you spring clean your car. You know, you clean it regularly because it’s healthier and it’s a better place to live in. And it is the same thing inside of your body. You know, as part of life, there are toxins and chemicals that are bad for you that find their way inside. So, the whole idea of a detox is to de-gunk the motor and get all the junk out.
What are the most common reasons people choose to detox?
Dr. Ken Freedman: Oh, gosh. There are a lot of reasons. They just don’t feel like they are at their best. They want to do something positive for themselves. They may suffer from a number of different maladies. You know, each one of these maladies that I may list does not automatically mean that your body is toxic, but people who have excess toxicity in their body tend to experience headaches and fatigue and digestive problems, and difficulty sleeping and waking. They are tired all the time and lethargic. They can have depression. There are a number of different conditions that can be associated with this. And people come in for a variety of different reasons.
Can you describe the detox program that your practice offers?
Dr. Ken Freedman: Oh, I’d be happy to. The program that I use, which, by the way, I am going to start this coming weekend, is from Standard Process. It involves a three week protocol of eating vegetables and fruits, as much as a person would like, and also supplementing with shakes and nutritional supplements that are all whole food based, meaning these nutritional supplements come from real whole foods that are organically grown and harvested. And then the nutrients from these whole foods that go into the supplements target the liver, the intestines, the kidneys, the lungs, the skin and the lymphatics. It helps to remove the buildup of toxins in these organs on a cellular level and improve their ability to function and your body’s ability to be able to function much better.
Is this program open to everyone, or do you have to meet certain health requirements?
Dr. Ken Freedman: It is open to everyone. It is absolutely safe. Anybody can do it, and it is really designed for people who are interested in having more energy, or they may have digestion and other gastrointestinal problems. They want to try and help themselves function better by eating healthier and reduce their intake of medications. They may be interested in losing weight. People typically lose weight on a program like this one. Most women can lose, on average, about five to 10 pounds. Most men can lose 10-20. It also reduces their cravings for certain foods. It helps improve mental clarity, and even improves libido. And your overall energy and state of mind. It is really great.
How can a quality detox program lead to long-term wellness?
Dr. Ken Freedman: Well, because when the body is subjected to stress, and there are three forms of stress, Liz. There is physical stress and emotional stress. So physical stress could be an accident, a fall, an injury, carrying heavy objects, things like that. Emotional stress, you know everybody knows what that is. But the body is also subjected to chemical stress. You can not avoid going outside and breathing the air, and it is filled with pollutants. People take recreational and therapeutic drugs. There are additives in the foods, colors and dyes and preservatives. People use cosmetics, hairsprays, skin lotions, hair dyes, makeup, things like that. People get tattoos. Cellular debris from infections and surgeries and injuries. These toxins that get into our body through the air we breathe, through the foods we eat, through our skin, take a toll on our health. It is not good to have these chemicals inside of us that do not belong there.
So, by doing a purification program and cleansing the body of these harmful toxins, it helps the body function a lot better, like taking the gunk out of the motor of a car helps it run cleaner and more powerfully, and prolongs the life of it and helps reduce the stress on the system. It is the same thing inside the body. So, people tend to do it on an every nine months to a year or so interval, especially if you live in an area that has a lot of industry, or you work in an industry like, for example, hairdressers, or people who work in factories and they are exposed to a lot of chemicals. It is very necessary as part of a wellness lifestyle.
